I’ve always wondered: is that probability a chance PER “black hole”. And if so…well, how many “black holes” are they going to make? If it’s anything like “oh – a couple million per trial” – oh boy, are we screwed.
I had a great deal of trouble finding an exact number for the Large Hadron Collider, so the comic takes some artistic license with the figure. The official safety report doesn’t give a probability and concludes that there is “no basis for any conceivable threat.” The actual probability might be many orders of magnitude lower than the one I used.
This is hardly the first time that we’ve worried about a science experiment destroying the world, but the problem with (and the appeal of) such things is that we don’t know exactly what will happen.
To be clear, I like the LHC, and I’m not worried about it ending the world. I think that asteroids, diseases, and bombs pose a far greater threat to the world’s short-term existence.
Wow you are so observant. Isn’t it amazing that more than one person is able to master that artistic challenge called the stick figure? And to add semi-humorous dialogue as well? No it can’t be done it must be a cheap imitation of of the great master of the genre XKCD. Stick figure dialogue strips are just too challenging to do.
Really, does it matter? I enjoyed your strip. Thanks for sharing.
It may be an xkcd clone but at least it’s a funny xkcd clone.
I really find nothing wrong with being inspired a particular work to create your own similar but still original work. :3
It’s what like.. 90% of the writers in the world do. ;P
If it did make a black hole it would be of such a small mass that it would evaporate through hawking radiation in less than a second so there should be nothing to worry about.

I beg your pardon. Where in the B-book did you read about my experiments with an LHC? Peter *swore* he was going to leave that section out. You just can’t get good help thenadays.
well if it created a black whole the mass would be sufficient to destroy earth and a few neighboring planets but it really doesnt have much of a chance of happening the particular interactions that will be present happen in nature as well.
Well, just to let you all know, this earth isn’t going to be destroyed by a black hole, so don’t worry about it. And if there is a chance, and they know it, why would they carry on with the project anyways, are they idiots??? Just wondering. But i love the comic strip 😛
And, why would they want to create the same explosion, If There Even Was One, as way back when, couldn’t that blow up the earth?? somebody obviously doesn’t care??

Asteroids, diseases, and bombs are good and all, but I’m more afraid of Chuck Norris.

I was thinking the exact same thing as Aaron…

Love it.
Richard, if dumbasses and godawful arent allowed on the internet, why the fuck do we have blogs, myspace, and youtube at all?

i completly understand

Aaron is the reason the internet sucks.
and Go LHC!

I’m really interested in the LHC and hope that they find the Higgs particle but I agree the chances of a black hole appearing are extremely small

Well, we’ll know in time if the black hole thing worked, just keep an eye on the Earth Destruction Status, http://qntm.org/?board
